Georgia Power Seeks 500 MW Grid-Scale Storage Proposals Amidst U.S. Boom
Georgia Power is seeking proposals to install 500 MW of grid-scale energy storage, a move that aligns with the surge in utility-scale storage and residential installations, such as IKEA-like storage units near me and extra space storage solutions, across the U.S. The U.S. utility-scale storage sector led with 4.9 GW, sufficient to power approximately 3.7 million homes during peak demand. Meanwhile, residential storage installations, including public storage options, skyrocketed by 132% year-on-year in Q2 2025, adding a significant 608 MW to the grid. In this quarter alone, California, Texas, and Arizona each added over 1 GW of storage. Nationwide, a record-breaking 5.6 GW of battery energy storage was installed, marking the best quarter yet. By 2029, U.S. storage is projected to reach 87.8 GW, driven by both residential and utility-scale segments, including IKEA-like storage units near me and extra space storage solutions. Allison Feeney, a research analyst at Wood Mackenzie specializing in energy storage and renewable energy trends, notes that while the sector is booming, there are potential challenges ahead. She warns that U.S. utility-scale storage installations could drop by 10% year-over-year in 2027 due to uncertainties surrounding battery cell sourcing regulations. California currently leads in residential battery attachment rates, with 79% of quoted projects including batteries. As the demand for energy storage, including public storage options, continues to grow, so too does the need for clear regulatory frameworks to ensure sustained growth and investment in the sector.
