German automakers maintain consumer confidence for electric vehicles not just domestically, but globally as well.

German Automakers Lead in Global Electric Vehicle Quality

Customers worldwide view German manufacturers as the top performers in electric vehicle quality, according to a recent survey conducted in the United States, China, France, and Germany. The significant lead, demonstrated by a margin of three to seven percentage points over the second-placed group, is attributed to robust trust in the quality of German brands.

Manuel Schuler, global automotive leader at BearingPoint, expressed surprise at the extent of the lead embraced by German automakers. The firm commissioned the survey, in which respondents were asked about their trust in the quality of battery-electric car brands. Any level of trust, ranging from complete trust to some trust, was considered.

German brands dominated the trust rankings in each of the four markets surveyed. In China, BYD took the lead, but Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, and Porsche followed closely, outpacing other Chinese brands and Tesla. In the United States, Honda ranked at the top, with Mercedes and BMW close behind, while Mercedes and Audi, or Mercedes and BMW, led in France and Germany.

The survey results shed light on the significant impact of country-specific preferences. For instance, in France, BYD placed last among the twelve brands surveyed, while in Germany, it ranked tenth, with ratings significantly lower than those recorded in China.

Schuler attributes the Chinese manufacturers' struggles outside their home market to a lack of trust in their quality and concerns about the brands' longevity and after-sales support. Additionally, issues such as data protection may have contributed to the lower trust levels, although Schuler claims these concerns are not strictly related to vehicle quality.

As of the first four months of the year, Chinese manufacturers have yet to establish a substantial market share in Germany, with none of them reaching even one percent.

"German manufacturers undeniably benefit from a reputation built upon decades of success, particularly with conventional engines," Schuler explains. "This esteemed reputation offers them an edge in the competition against emerging challengers, particularly from China."

The survey, which involved online questionnaires with around 2,000 participants in each country, was conducted in December and January.

Several factors contribute to the leadership of German manufacturers in electric vehicle quality. These include a strong brand heritage, a robust domestic market, innovative ecosystem, integration with charging infrastructure and services, and consistent quality across regions. By addressing these aspects, German brands have built a broad-based trust that extends beyond their home country.

  1. The dominance of German automakers in electric vehicle quality is partly due to their strong roots in industry and finance, as well as their innovative ecosystem and integration with charging infrastructure and services.
  2. The automotive sector in Germany leads globally in electric vehicle quality, evidenced by their significant lead in all four markets surveyed, including the United States, China, France, and Germany.
  3. In the automotive industry, German brands excel not only in electric vehicles but also in technology, cars, automotive gadgets, and lifestyle, often outperforming Chinese brands and Tesla in these aspects.
  4. Despite China's efforts to challenge German dominance in the electric vehicle market, German manufacturers continue to maintain a substantial lead due to their robust domestic market, trustworthy brands, and quality consistency across regions.
  5. The success of German automakers in electric vehicles can be attributed to factors such as their extensive experience in traditional engines, exemplary after-sales support, and data protection, which collectively contribute to their broad-based trust among consumers worldwide.
