German corporation UTSCH earns top 3-star rating from Road Safety Index, a platform that assesses road safety performance, identifies risks, and promotes safety improvements. This recognition was awarded at the 2025 ITF Summit in Leipzig. The Road Safety Index serves as a tool for organizations to evaluate their road safety impact.

German firm UTSCH secures top 3-Star ranking on road safety index, marking it as the first German-based company to attain this accolade.

The Road Safety Index, a globally unique methodology, empowers companies and organizations to gauge, document, and enhance their road safety impact. UTSCH has proven the Index's transformative power, swiftly addressing safety gaps and earning a prestigious 3-star rating in just a few months.

UTSCH's swift progress underscores the potential of data-driven insights combined with strong leadership in drastically reducing road risks, improving operational efficiency, and promoting employee well-being. Willem Groenewald, Secretary General for Automobile Mobility at the platform hosting the Index, lauded UTSCH's achievement, stating, "The Index is helping companies convert commitments into tangible outcomes. UTSCH, the first German company to earn a 3-star rating, sets a powerful example. This achievement reflects both their dedication and the Index's growing role as a catalyst for safer roads."

Dominic Höffgen, UTSCH Group CEO, shared his perspective, saying, "The Index provided us with a clear roadmap to revise our internal policies. With its support and insights, we effectively transformed our road safety practices. Reaching the 3-star rating is not just about what we've achieved, but how far we've come in building a safety-focused culture."

Stephen Perkins, Senior Counsellor at the International Transport Forum (ITF), commended the initiative, stating, "Companies can significantly impact road safety, benefiting both their workforces and the communities they serve. The Index is spearheading the development of tools to guide management on road safety and recognize successful practices. The ITF supports the initiative and is also collaborating with the World Health Organization and corporations to establish a complementary reporting system for companies to showcase best practices."

The announcement was made during the ITF Summit 2025 in Leipzig and coincided with the adoption of a new Policy Recommendation on Comprehensive Road Safety Policy by the Council of Ministers of Transport of the ITF. The recommendation urges corporate action and cites the Road Safety Index as an advanced tool available to help businesses enhance their road safety performance. The full recommendation can be found here.

For this rating, the scope was limited to Germany and covered the entire Erich UTSCH AG site, estimating approximately 2 million kilometers of annual travel.

The Road Safety Index serves as a structured tool for organizations, particularly those managing fleets or city-wide transportation systems, to assess and improve their road safety performance. By evaluating current safety performance against best practices, identifying and mitigating risks, monitoring performance, integrating safety practices across the value chain, and providing support and collaboration, the Index helps organizations reduce crashes, protect stakeholders, and support broader safety goals. Examples of its application include fleet operators, such as New York City's Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), using the index to evaluate fleet safety efforts, and cities using collision indices to proactively identify and address high-risk roads.

Businesses can leverage the Road Safety Index to improve their road safety performance, promoting employee well-being and operational efficiency. For instance, UTSCH, a German company that attained a 3-star rating, used the Index to revise their internal policies and build a Safety-focused culture, demonstrating its transformative power in the finance sector.

The strong collaboration between companies, technology, and the Index can lead to significant advancements in road safety, as demonstrated by UTSCH's achievement and the growing role of the Index as a catalyst for safer roads. This synergy also aids in the development of tools to guide businesses in road safety, as supported by the International Transport Forum (ITF) and the World Health Organization.
