Germany to Launch State-Backed Digital ID Wallet by 2027

The German government is set to introduce a state-backed digital ID wallet by 2027, based on the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet framework. This initiative, led by the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), and the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation (SPRIND), aims to securely facilitate access to online services, sign documents, and store digital documents. The REC has welcomed this development, seeing it as a means to boost employment, simplify hiring, and combat fraud in the labor market.

The digital ID wallet will enable citizens to securely access public and private online services, sign documents, and store digital documents such as driver's licenses and public transport tickets. The initiative allows both public and approved private providers to develop such wallets, with a proof-of-concept competition and funding for prototypes already underway. This digital ID system can lead to a more efficient benefits system and facilitate faster job starts, reducing administrative burdens in the labor market.

Digital ID is already used daily for various purposes like mobile payments, travel, and event tickets. With the government's support, it can now become a crucial tool for creating a verifiable credential passport to support job searches.

The German government's digital ID wallet, due by 2027, promises secure access to online services and efficient labor market processes. Backed by the REC, this initiative could significantly enhance employment prospects, simplify hiring for businesses, and prevent fraud, all while streamlining the benefits system.
