Giant Monster Godzilla alive: Nissan announces project for new GT-R variant

Nissan is developing an all-new GT-R supercar, a fact that has been met with excitement among car enthusiasts worldwide. The company's VP of Product Marketing Strategy, Arnaud Charpentier, has confirmed the work in progress.

The new GT-R will not be a simple badge job with batteries; it will maintain its sporting credentials. While powertrain specs, production timelines, and pricing for the new GT-R have yet to be disclosed, it is likely that the vehicle will feature a future-ready powertrain, which could be electric or electrified.

Last year, Nissan unveiled the Hyper Force concept, an all-electric vehicle with a colossal 1000kW power output. This could be an indication of the direction Nissan is taking with the new GT-R. However, it's important to note that the specifics about the new GT-R's powertrain are still under wraps.

Nissan executives have been unusually eager to talk about the GT-R. Giovanny Arroba, Nissan Europe's design VP, referred to the Hyper Force concept as a "tangible dream" to achieve by the end of the decade. The R36, the predecessor to the upcoming GT-R, is not a myth; it's just lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike.

The GT-R's resurrection may be more about brand halo than bottom line. Nissan is in the midst of a brutal restructuring, axing 20,000 jobs, closing factories, and simplifying its global lineup. The new GT-R could serve as a symbol of Nissan's commitment to performance and innovation, boosting the brand's image and appeal.

Interestingly, Nissan's new boss, Ivan Espinosa, is reportedly a sports car enthusiast who drives a Z daily and has expressed interest in reviving the Silvia as well. The Z, despite hanging on, is not exactly raking in blockbuster sales. The new Sentra, along with several other high-volume models, is in the pipeline to bolster Nissan's sales figures.

There have also been rumours of a possible link with the next Acura NSX. However, these remain speculations for now, and Nissan has not officially confirmed any collaboration.

The timeline for the new GT-R's release is not yet clear. But one thing is certain: the new GT-R is shaping up to be an exciting addition to Nissan's lineup, promising to deliver the sporty performance that the GT-R is known for, while embracing the future with a forward-thinking powertrain. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated supercar.
