Straight up, Globalfoundries is going big on its Dresden chip factory in Saxony, Germany. They're planning on letting loose around €1.1 billion in the coming years, according to insiders, with the German government prepared to chip in several hundred million euros under the European chip laws [1][4]. The exact amount of the subsidies is still hazy, but they've already scored the green light for an early construction start. Neither Globalfoundries nor the Federal Ministry of Economics has said zilch on the matter so far [2].

Basecamp for the US company's 60,000 square meter clean rooms in Dresden, 3,200 employees produce 800,000 to 850,000 wafer starts annually [2]. These wafer starts, or basic plates for later electronic chips, are soon set to increase progressively to a whopping 1.5 million in the coming years [1][2][4]. Globalfoundries can already take preliminary steps like investing in crucial machinery before the actual funding approval [2].

MP Oliver Schenk calls this "another milestone for the European high-tech location in Saxony and the semiconductor independence of Europe." It reduces the region's reliance on non-European suppliers, bolsters the industrial base, and safeguards high-skilled jobs [2].

Dresden, known as "Silicon Saxony," is a crucial semiconductor production hub in Germany. Globalfoundries' been a part of the scene for quite some time. Infineon also runs a plant in the Saxon state capital, which is in the midst of a hefty expansion [4]. On top of that, German company Infineon and rival TSMC are teaming up to build a new production plant in the area [4].

By the Way, the Yanks got their hands dirtied too. Globalfoundries is planning on investing a staggering $16 billion in the United States to boost its AI-enabled semiconductor production at existing sites in New York and Vermont [3][4]. Trump's administration is reportedly supportive, and technology bigwigs, such as Apple, SpaceX, and AMD, are keen on relocating critical components of their supply chain back to the U.S. [3]
