Google AI Search Potentially Decreasing Website Visits? Here's Google's Response

In a significant shift in the digital landscape, Google's introduction of its AI-powered Search experience has raised concerns about a potential long-term decline in website traffic and organic clicks. Multiple independent analyses have shown reductions in click-through rates by approximately 30-35% or more for sites presented alongside AI summaries.

Key data points include an average organic clicks drop of 34.5% on pages featuring AI Overviews, based on an Ahrefs analysis of 300,000 keywords. BrightEdge reports a 30% drop in click-through rates, despite a 49% year-over-year increase in Google search impressions, directly attributed to AI Overviews delivering answers on the search page itself.

Pew Research Center found that users exposed to AI summaries clicked on traditional search results only about 8% of the time, versus nearly 15% when no AI summary was present. This stark behavior shift contributes to the rise of the "zero-click" phenomenon, particularly for informational and question-based queries.

However, Google disputes a large-scale decline in aggregate click volume to websites, claiming their internal data shows relatively stable total organic clicks year-over-year and even a slight increase in "average click quality." They argue that third-party studies may use flawed or incomplete methods and that traffic shifts are happening unevenly — some sites lose visits while others gain.

Despite these claims, the independent research and observable traffic trends provide strong evidence that the AI-powered search experience significantly reduces overall website traffic in the long term. Google's AI responses, which include links, source citations, and in-line attributions, aim to allow users to explore more, but for many, the immediate answers provided by AI Overviews mean fewer clicks to external websites.

Google emphasizes that AI in Search is designed to highlight the web, not replace it. However, the debate around its long-term impact on websites is likely to continue as user trends shift traffic to different sites, resulting in decreased traffic to some sites and increased traffic to others.

As of now, Google has not mentioned any plans to address the concerns of websites experiencing decreased traffic due to its AI Search experience. It remains to be seen how this evolving landscape will shape the future of online content consumption and website traffic.
