Hamburg's water police receive two new vessels

The Hamburg Water Police are set to modernize their fleet with the addition of two new police boats, scheduled for delivery in 2025. These environmentally friendly vessels are being built in Estonia by Baltic Workboats AS and will be deployed in both Cuxhaven and Hamburg.

These new boats will join four other hybrid-operated boats already in operation within the Hamburg fleet, marking a significant step towards a greener water fleet for the city. The cost of building the two vessels is approximately €17 million.

André Bertram, the head of the water police in Hamburg, has confirmed that these new boats will be put into service there in 2025. One of the key features of these boats is their environmentally friendly propulsion system, capable of operating purely electrically for up to two hours.

The new boats are expected to partially replace four older coastal patrol boats from the 1990s. This move towards eco-friendly technology is part of a broader initiative by the City of Hamburg, HVV, and CarSharers to expand e-mobility, with the aim of increasing the number of electric vehicles available for public use by 2024.

The keel-laying ceremony for the new boats has already taken place, signifying a significant milestone in their construction. This development is not limited to the water fleet, as Hamburg Airport has also formed a consortium for fossil-free aviation, aiming to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector.

Emission-free ships are expected on the Alster from 2025, implying a shift towards e-mobility not just in the water fleet but across Hamburg's transport network. The arrival of these new boats will undoubtedly contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future for the city's waterways.
