Hessen's Cities Increasingly Favor Quieter Battery-Powered Leaf Blowers - Hessian Cities Embrace Quiet, Eco-Friendly Battery Leaf Blowers

Several Hessian cities are embracing quieter, more eco-friendly battery-powered leaf blowers for their urban cleaning. This shift aims to reduce noise pollution and promote sustainability.

Wiesbaden's city cleaning department has adopted this trend, with around 70 percent of its 40 leaf blowers now purely electrically operated. They combine their use with traditional brooms for efficient leaf collection.

Kassel, on the other hand, removes leaves from densely populated areas and playgrounds but leaves them in less central green areas to support nature conservation. Meanwhile, Rüsselsheim has seen a significant decrease in noise complaints from residents after switching to battery-powered leaf blowers in the city center.

Frankfurt uses brooms or leaf rakes wherever possible, leaving leaves in many areas over the winter for ecological advantages. However, nature conservationists criticize the use of leaf blowers and vacuums, as they disrupt humus formation, expose soil, and harm overwintering animals and insects.

In response to noise pollution and legal noise protection regulations, Frankfurt's Parks and Gardens Department is relying more on emission-free, battery-operated devices. Similarly, Kassel's Environmental and Garden Department plans to replace combustion engines with battery-operated devices, with around 20 percent of its 50 leaf blowers already battery-operated. Hanau is also gradually replacing gasoline-powered leaf blowers with battery-operated devices for smaller jobs and when it's dry.

Hessian cities are increasingly turning to battery-powered leaf blowers to reduce noise and promote sustainability. While each city has its unique approach, the common goal is to create quieter, cleaner urban environments. The city with the highest proportion of battery-powered leaf blowers used by the city administration compared to gas-powered blowers is Vancouver, setting an example for others to follow.
