Hydrogen Energy company Hyphen unveils Memorandums of Understanding for ammonia deliveries with Approtium and Industrial Group
In a significant development for Namibia's renewable energy sector, Hyphen Hydrogen Energy has been awarded preferred bidder status for the development of the country's first fully vertically integrated GW scale green hydrogen project. The project, spanning approximately 4,000 km² within the Tsau //Khaeb National Park, is set to be a game-changer in Namibia's pursuit of a sustainable energy future.
Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, a Namibian registered green hydrogen development company, plans to utilise the produced green ammonia to decarbonise energy domestically within Namibia and the southern Africa region. The project is being developed as the first step in the implementation of the Government's strategy for the development of a large-scale green hydrogen industry in various regions in Namibia.
Marco Raffinetti, the CEO of Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, "We are thrilled to be part of Namibia's green energy revolution. Our project is not just about producing green hydrogen; it's about creating a sustainable future for Namibia and the region."
The project is planned to be developed in phases and is expected to employ an estimate of 3,000 people. Over 90% of the construction jobs supported over the four-year construction period are expected to be filled by Namibians.
Hyphen's primary focus is the supply of hydrogen into Europe, particularly Germany, but South Korea is expected to emerge as a key market in the green hydrogen sector. The company aims to produce one million tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2027 and increase production to two million tonnes by 2029 for export.
Significant partnerships have been forged to support this ambitious project. Hyphen has signed Memorandums of Understanding with the French companies Air Liquide and TotalEnergies, and the contracts were signed in France. Additionally, Hyphen has signed non-binding MoUs with Approtium and Industrial Group for the supply of up to 750,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. The agreements with Approtium and Industrial Group, along with the one with RWE Supply and Trading, total more than one million tonnes of ammonia per annum.
Approtium, a South Korean hydrogen producer, was wholly acquired by Macquarie in December of 2021. Since the transition of ownership, Approtium has made significant investments to its facilities, process management, and people to improve its ability to provide hydrogen and liquid CO2 safely and reliably to its clients in the Korean market.
The project, once fully developed, aims to produce 300,000 metric tons of Green Hydrogen annually from 5-6GW of renewable generation capacity and 3GW electrolyser. The total cost of the project is estimated to be US$10 billion.
The project is intended to support both economic growth in Namibia and assist the world in achieving its decarbonisation goals. With the groundbreaking work being done by Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, Namibia is poised to become a leader in the global green hydrogen industry.
