HydrogREenBoost Unveils Hybrid Grid Booster for Power Grid Boost and Cost Reduction
A groundbreaking project, 'HydrogREenBoost', has developed a hybrid grid booster that combines a battery storage system and a hydrogen-capable gas turbine. This innovative technology aims to bolster the power grid and reduce costs.
The hybrid grid booster can rapidly ramp up power, with the battery storage system reaching full capacity in just 2.4 seconds. After 25.4 minutes, the hydrogen turbine takes over, providing sustained power.
Developed by experts from KIT, TUU, ZSW, and Transnet BW, the 500-megawatt plant demonstrated its potential in a dedicated grid laboratory at TUU. The plant's battery storage capacity of 176.5 megawatt-hours and hydrogen-capable turbine showed promising results under realistic conditions.
The project seeks to reduce redispatch costs and generate revenue through trading on the balancing market. Amortization times of three to seven years are projected through these savings. Further investigations are planned to explore alternative implementation strategies and integration into existing grid topologies.
The hybrid grid booster, a product of the 'HydrogREenBoost' project, has the potential to play a significant role in the future energy transition. Its ability to serve as a safety buffer for the power grid and reduce costs makes it an attractive solution for grid operators and energy providers alike.
