Imperial Debut of Clip Reveals Sinister Side of General Grievous Again

A Fresh Take on General Grievous: Tales of the Empire

It's been a solid 20 years since the chilling General Grievous graced our screens in Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars microseries. But, well, Revenge of the Sith and the Clone Wars 3DCG series snatched away the menace we loved, turning him into a less-than-intimidating Saturday morning villain, more lightsaber twirling than mustache-stroking. That's all about to change with Tales of the Empire, its spiritual successor to Tales of the Jedi.

Today, Lucasfilm has given us a sneak peek into Tales of the Empire, an anthology series that promises to explore stories of the Dark Side. The series will delve into the life of Morgan Elsbeth before she joined Thrawn's service, and whatever happened to Barriss Offee post her Clone War radicalization. While the Morgan side of things appears to be the main focus, the clip they've released sees Grievous as the instigator of a traumatic past for Morgan.

The clip features a familiar scene from the 3D Clone Wars series, a devastating assault by Grievous and an army of Battle Droids on Dathomir, aimed at Asajj Ventress and her Nightsister comrades. It's a brief but exciting glimpse of things to come, a lovely reminder of a moment we first saw 12 years ago, now updated with modern visuals and style.

What's particularly exciting is that, with the freedom to act as a catalyst for Morgan's traumatic past, Grievous can let loose as the pure, sinister force we first fell in love with. In the Clone Wars series, Grievous rarely had the chance to shine as the menacing agent of death we'd known from his debut in the 2D series. With Tales of the Empire, it seems we might finally see a return to that edge.

Tales of the Empire is set to stream on Disney+ on May 4, and we can hardly wait. Might as well mark our calendars while we're at it— updates on the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, the future of Doctor Who, and more DC Universe news on film and TV are all on the horizon.
