Implementation of Online Gaming Regulations Scheduled for October 1st

Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, which was passed by Parliament last month, will be implemented from October 1st, 2021. This law bars all forms of online money games.

The minister has also finalised the rules for the implementation of the Online Money Gaming law, and discussions with the online gaming industry and other stakeholders have been ongoing for the last three years. However, if the industry requires more time for the implementation, the government will consider a more consultative approach.

Several online gaming platforms, including Dream11, My11 Circle, WinZO, Zupee, PokerBaazi, and Nazara Technologies-backed PokerBaazi, have halted their real-money online gaming offerings in anticipation of the new law. One of the concerns flagged by the online gaming industry is around how to return the money that is still left in user accounts.

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act promotes e-sports and other online games. The minister aims to start the implementation of the new Online Money Gaming law from next month. The search results do not contain information about the conditions under which the online gambling industry should refund user account funds according to the October 2021 law. Therefore, no answer can be provided based on the available information.

During a pre-event conference for the AI Impact Summit 2026 India, Ashwini Vaishnaw made these statements about the Online Money Gaming law. If the industry needs more time or has further concerns, the government is still engaged in discussions to ensure a smooth transition.
