In a move that mirrors the financial success and growth of Roblox, Epic Games has announced that creators in its Creator program for Fortnite can start monetizing their virtual goods from December 2021. This decision comes as Epic looks to emulate the thriving community of creators on Roblox, which has seen multiple hit games and revenues surpassing $1 billion in 2024.

Since its inception, Roblox has been growing in popularity, with its unique platform hosting a multitude of games. However, safety concerns have been raised, leading to the introduction of more monitoring and filtering features. Despite these concerns, the specific measures Roblox has taken to improve safety on its platform remain undisclosed.

In contrast, Epic Games has announced that creators will earn 100% of the revenue from the sale of their virtual goods from December 2021 until the end of 2026. This boost in revenue cut is a significant departure from the usual 50% creators ordinarily earn before platform and store fees. The revenue earned from the sale of in-game items made by creators and money from engagement payouts for Epic-created items will contribute to their earnings.

Fees for the sale of items in the Epic Games Store vary. They range from 12% to 30%, depending on whether players buy items directly from the Epic Games Store or from platforms such as the PlayStation Store or the Xbox Store.

Interestingly, Fortnite returned to the iOS platform in Europe and to Android devices this year, after a brief absence. However, the ongoing legal battles between Epic and Apple or Google were not discussed in the article.

The names of the largest Fortnite creators who will receive 100% revenue from sales of their virtual goods from December 2021 until the end of 2026 were not disclosed in the article. This move by Epic Games is expected to foster a more vibrant and engaged community of creators, similar to the thriving community on Roblox.
