On September 9, 2024, Maria João Pires was preparing for a Mozart concerto performance in Amsterdam. However, a scheduling mistake led to a last-minute change in the concerto she was to perform. Instead of playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No.20 (K.488), as she had been preparing, Pires was told over the phone that she would be playing Mozart's D minor concerto (K.466) instead.

The conductor of the performance, Riccardo Chailly, recounted that Pires was shocked when the D minor concerto was started instead of the expected one. Despite the surprise, Pires miraculously joined in with the correct concerto without missing a single note. This incident is now considered a testament to Pires' professionalism, musical mind, and grace in musicianship.

Pires revealed in an interview that she was replacing another artist during the general rehearsal for the performance. She had not played Mozart's K.466 concerto for about 11 months before the performance. remarkably, this was not the first time such a mistake had occurred in Pires' career. She has revealed that this happened to her two other times in her life.

The performance was an open rehearsal in Amsterdam, and it was caught on video. Joanna Gosling shared the video of Pires' viral performance on Twitter in February 2024, causing it to go viral again. Gosling praised Chailly as "the cheerleader we all want in our corner," and Pires responded, "belief and bravery in action."

The incident reveals much about the busy life of a musician, the nature of their craft, and the wonders of the memory and the brain. It serves as a reminder of the importance of adaptability and resilience in the face of unexpected challenges.
