Insights Gleaned from a Casual Conversation with Autodesk's CEO in 2025

In a candid conversation at the Autodesk University 2025 keynote, Autodesk CEO Andrew Anagnost revealed the company's ambitious plans to redefine the future of design, engineering, and construction.

Autodesk is prioritizing accessibility, lowering complexity for seasoned users and opening doors for new entrants. The next generation of designers, engineers, artists, and animators can step in with less friction than ever before. This is made possible by Autodesk's development of a unified end-to-end environment for construction software called Forma.

Forma aims to bring together conceptual design, detailed engineering, MEP planning, and construction management under one roof. It will be powered by a single data layer, eliminating the need for users to juggle separate platforms or align different teams' data.

The company is engineering a future where creativity, productivity, and professional judgment coexist. To achieve this, Autodesk is rebuilding its intellectual property into foundation models designed for industrial use. Machine learning and optimization are currently dominant, but Autodesk sees generative AI as the defining force of the next era.

Autodesk is developing new AI tools to automate monotone tasks, optimize workflows, and improve creative control across design, animation, and rendering processes. These include AI-enhanced automatic dependencies and dimensioning in sketches for faster CAD modeling, neural CAD models that understand and reason about CAD objects for smoother concept-to-design transitions, and AI solutions like AI Mood Match for lighting and environment matching, AI Upscaler for rendering upscaling with photorealistic quality, and AI Material Recommender providing context-specific material suggestions.

Tools like Flow Studio and the next generation of Maya are being designed to allow small firms to achieve outputs once reserved for the largest studios. Large firms can push into more ambitious work without compromising the sophistication of the results. An example of AI integration is an AI agent that can automatically adjust concrete pricing across a live model in real time.

Autodesk is moving towards more flexible, usage-based licensing and consumption models. The company is less about software as a tool and more about software as a collaborative, intelligent partner. AI will extend across Autodesk's tools, including generative design, simulation, and real-time construction data management.

The conversation with Anagnost was surprising in its candour. He revealed Autodesk's commitment to replacing itself with the next generation of technology. AI-driven tasks will increasingly consume compute on demand. To keep its expansion responsible, Autodesk is planning to use sustainable data centers, optimization, and edge computing.

The Autodesk University 2025 keynote has concluded, marking a significant step forward in Autodesk's journey towards an AI-driven future. With its focus on accessibility, automation, and collaboration, Autodesk is set to revolutionize the fields of design, engineering, and construction.
