Interpol's Haechi VI Nets $439M in Global Cybercrime Bust
Interpol's global operation, Haechi VI, has resulted in significant seizures and arrests, demonstrating the international police organization's effectiveness in combating cybercrime. The operation, which spanned 40 countries, recovered a substantial amount of stolen funds and assets.
Operation Haechi VI, coordinated by Interpol, targeted a wide range of cybercrimes, including romance scams, sextortion, and money laundering linked to illegal online gambling. The operation resulted in the recovery of $342m in government-backed currencies and $97m in physical and virtual assets. Notably, Interpol's I-GRIP technology played a crucial role in intercepting and returning $3.91m sent to an illegitimate account at a US bank in Dubai.
In Thailand, the operation led to the seizure of $6.6m in stolen assets from a gang that tricked a Japanese firm. Meanwhile, in Portugal, a network that stole $270,000 from 531 victims by illegally accessing social security accounts and altering bank details at a BOA was taken down. Overall, Interpol blocked over 68,000 bank accounts and froze nearly 400 crypto wallets, extracting approximately $16m in suspected illegal profits.
Operation Haechi VI, financially supported by South Korea, is a testament to Interpol's global reach and effectiveness in combating organized crime and financial fraud. The operation's success in recovering stolen funds and assets, as well as its impact on various types of cybercrime, highlights the importance of international cooperation in protecting communities and safeguarding financial systems.
