Interview with Liyana Mansor, VFX Editor

Liyana Mansor, a first-time Emmy nominee, is making waves in the world of visual effects (VFX) editing, with her work on the highly anticipated Disney+ series Andor marking her entry into the Star Wars franchise[1][5]. Born in Brunei and raised in the north of England, Mansor's career path has been a journey of over 10 years, spanning a variety of high-profile productions such as Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, The Alienist, Chernobyl, Black Mirror, and Alien: Covenant[1][5].

Mansor's VFX editing skills were honed through practical experience, with a focus on temp compositing and VFX shot mockups. She relies on a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet and Avid Media Composer software, complemented by plugins like Continuum, Sapphire, and Adobe Photoshop, to handle complex VFX editing tasks efficiently[1].

One of her go-to tools for cleaner green screen replacements is Continuum's Primatte Studio. For creating holographic projection effects, she employs a combination of Boris FX plugins[3]. Mansor also collects VFX elements for her temp comp process, especially for action scenes with muzzle flashes, fire, smoke, and weather elements[4].

Mansor's work on The Alienist and Chernobyl fills her with pride, and her first VFX editor role was on Black Mirror. She learned the visual effects process on the large-scale project Alien: Covenant[2].

When faced with new problems due to industry and technological progress, Mansor approaches each project with determination, knowing that every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow[6]. If she could collaborate with any artist, it would be Bong Joon-ho, Yang Jinmo, or Rian Johnson[7].

When creative burnout strikes, Mansor switches gears and works on something else, returning to the problem later or the next day[8]. Her favorite snack during long work sessions is Cinnamon Social slices[9].

Mansor's advice to her younger self is never to hesitate or count herself out of an opportunity just because she doesn't feel ready[10]. Her favorite film is Gwoemul (The Host) by Bong Joon-ho[11].
