IOM Launches Pan-African WakaWell Youth Hackathon for Safe Migration
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has launched the Pan-African WakaWell Youth Hackathon. This initiative aims to empower youth with safe and informed migration decisions by developing Artificial Intelligence-powered travel buddies for the WakaWell platform. The two-day event brought together 20 young innovators from eight African countries to co-design digital solutions for safe youth migration.
The WakaWell platform, an online hub providing verified migration guidance for young Africans, has seen significant growth since its inception. With over 62,000 users in 2024, the platform plans to expand to East Africa this year, covering a total of 11 countries. The first WakaWell Youth Hackathon was initiated by the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) in 2022, with the platform becoming available in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda during that expansion phase.
The hackathon demonstrated the power of innovation and collaboration. Selected from over 200 applicants, 20 young innovators worked alongside IOM mentors to develop AI-powered travel buddies. These tools will assist youth in making safe migration decisions, ensuring WakaWell remains a trusted resource across Africa.
The WakaWell Youth Hackathon showcased the potential of youth leadership in advancing digital solutions for safe mobility. With IOM's support, the initiative continues to grow, expanding its reach to East Africa and beyond. The developed AI-powered travel buddies will enhance the platform's capabilities, further aiding youth in their migration journeys.
