Ionna Launches 30,000 High-Powered EV Chargers Across North America
Ionna, a joint venture by seven major automakers, has received the green light to start operations. The company aims to tackle the lack of convenient electric vehicle (EV) charging options, a significant hurdle to wider EV adoption. Ionna plans to install at least 30,000 high-powered chargers across North America.
The newly formed association, led by an unnamed figure, will open its first U.S. charging stations this year, with Canada following suit. Each location will feature multiple high-powered chargers, allowing drivers to travel longer distances. Ionna's compatibility with the NACS port opens access to $7.5 billion in federal funding for expanding EV charging infrastructure in the U.S.
Ionna's charging sites will offer amenities such as restrooms, food service, and retail operations nearby or within the same complex. Drivers of EVs equipped with Tesla's North America Charging Standard or Combined Charging System ports will be able to use the network. The company plans to introduce plug-and-charge technology for convenient charging sessions without needing an app or credit card. Additionally, charging network functions and services will be accessible via participating automakers' vehicle infotainment units.
With regulatory approval secured, Ionna is set to install a minimum of 30,000 high-powered EV chargers in strategic locations across North America. The network aims to make EV charging more convenient, addressing a key barrier to widespread EV adoption. Several automakers have committed to adding the NACS port to future vehicles, further expanding compatibility with the Ionna network.
