Apple is reportedly gearing up to join the foldable smartphone market with the announcement of its first foldable iPhone. Here's what we know about this highly anticipated device:

According to reports, Apple is planning to set up a small-scale facility in Taiwan to trial equipment and assembly methods for the foldable iPhone. The tech giant will experiment with the display integration, hinge durability, and material engineering at this facility before ramping up its production in India.

The foldable iPhone is expected to feature a dual rear camera setup and a single front-facing camera. Apple is also considering ditching Face ID for the foldable model and instead integrating Touch ID in the power button for biometric authentication.

The device's inner display is expected to be crease-free, supplied by Samsung Display. To improve durability and reduce the mechanical stress of repeated folding, a custom metal hinge and backplate, reportedly designed by Fine M-Tec, could be used.

The first foldable iPhone is expected to sport a 5.5-inch external cover display alongside a 7.8-inch inner foldable screen. It's rumoured that the device will have a titanium frame and a hinge made from a mix of titanium and stainless steel.

Apple is targeting a significant jump in its iPhone production for 2026, with a goal of 95 million units. This is a considerable increase compared to the previous year. Total shipments for 2025 are expected to be around 220 million devices, with this year's target for the newly launched iPhone 17 series set at 85 million units.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has previously suggested that the foldable iPhone may carry a premium price tag of around $2,000 (approx. Rs 1,65,000). The device is expected to be unveiled in September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 lineup.

The production of the first foldable iPhone could potentially take place in India, with Foxconn reportedly taking over the production of the device in both Taiwan and India. Trial production is planned in Taiwan before mass production shifts to India.

With these developments, Apple's foray into the foldable smartphone market could result in annual shipments exceeding 240 million units worldwide. The official details of the first foldable iPhone are yet to come, but the anticipation is building as we approach its expected launch date.
