Kioxia is testing UFS Version 4.1 Embedded Flash Memory devices for use in automotive applications.
In a significant leap forward for in-vehicle storage, Kioxia Corporation, a world leader in memory solutions, has announced the launch of its new Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Ver. 4.1 devices. These innovative devices are designed to meet the demands of next-generation in-vehicle systems, offering significant improvements in performance, flexibility, diagnostic capabilities, and reliability.
Key features and improvements of the UFS 4.1 devices include:
Higher Performance
Compared to their UFS 3.1 counterparts, the UFS 4.1 devices deliver impressive performance gains. For instance, sequential read and write speeds are approximately 2.1 and 2.5 times faster, respectively. Random read and write speeds see similar improvements, with speeds approximately 2.1 and 3.7 times faster, respectively. These enhancements promise a more responsive user experience in data-intensive automotive environments such as infotainment and Advanced Driving Assistant Systems (ADAS).
Automotive-Grade Reliability
The devices meet AEC-Q100/104 Grade 2 standards, supporting case temperatures up to 115°C. This ensures durability and stable operation under harsh automotive conditions.
Advanced Memory Technology
Kioxia’s UFS 4.1 devices incorporate its generation 8 BiCS FLASH™ 3D flash memory, featuring CMOS directly Bonded to Array (CBA) technology. This innovation integrates CMOS circuitry directly with the memory array, resulting in major gains in power efficiency, performance, and memory density.
UFS 4.1 Specification Compliance
Full compliance with UFS 4.1, including WriteBooster related extensions like Buffer Resizing and Pinned Partial Flush Mode, offers better flexibility for optimal performance and backwards compatibility with UFS 4.0 and 3.1 standards.
Enhanced Diagnostic Capabilities
The devices include newly added vendor-specific device health descriptors, simplifying device status monitoring and supporting predictive maintenance, crucial for automotive use cases where reliability and early fault detection are vital.
JEDEC-Standard Package
Integration of the flash memory and controller in a JEDEC-standard package facilitates industry-standard compatibility and deployment in vehicle systems.
Support for Emerging Automotive Needs
Designed for diverse automotive systems — infotainment, ADAS, telematics, domain controllers, and vehicle computers — these devices are capable of handling increasing data demands and complex computing tasks in cars.
In summary, Kioxia’s UFS 4.1 devices for automotive applications combine significant speed improvements, advanced power-efficient flash memory technology, enhanced diagnostic features, and robust automotive-grade reliability to meet the rigorous requirements of modern in-vehicle electronics.
The new UFS 4.1 devices are available in capacities of 128 gigabytes (GB), 256GB, 512GB, and 1 terabyte (TB). For media inquiries, contact Kioxia Corporation at the provided contact information.
