Kraken Smartphone Case Image Collection
In the vibrant waters of Sri Lanka, a series of stunning underwater photographs were captured using an unexpected combination of tools – an iPhone 6s+, a Kraken Smart Phone Housing, and a selection of Fantasea lenses.
During the photo workshops led by the author, the Car Wreck, Medhufaru Wreck, and other locations in Sri Lanka served as the backdrop for these captivating images. The Kraken Hydra 5000 lights and the Fantasea UWL-09F Wide-Angle lens were used in some of the photos, providing a wide field of view and ample illumination.
The use of continuous lighting techniques was a key factor in these successful underwater shoots. Video lights, such as those from Fantasea, were employed as constant light sources to assist focusing and composition. By positioning these lights close to the subject and camera, water and particulates were reduced, improving image clarity and color saturation while minimizing backscatter.
In some instances, strobes were combined with the continuous lighting to boost flash power for stills, while the continuous lighting maintained visual control. When only using constant lighting, sufficient brightness and correct beam angle were ensured to properly light subjects at various distances.
Manual white balance adjustments and exposure adjustments were also crucial to counteract blue/green underwater color casts. The photographs were taken with moderate power and placement at approximate 45-degree angles from the subject, helping to avoid flat light and harsh shadows, and further reducing backscatter.
One unique aspect of these photographs was the use of distortion to create a fun effect in some images. A big picture photo was taken using an iPhone 6s+ in a Kraken Smart Phone Housing and the Fantasea UWL-09F Wide-Angle lens, showcasing the versatility of this setup.
The Perseus shipwreck in Sri Lanka was also filmed using an iPhone 6s+ in a Kraken Smart Phone Housing, demonstrating the potential of this affordable setup to compete with more sophisticated systems.
The author emphasized the importance of problem-solving and experimentation in photography, encouraging participants to push the boundaries and create their own unique underwater masterpieces. This case study serves as a testament to the power of innovative thinking and the combination of affordable technology to achieve professional-quality results.
