Launches Digital Store for First-Time Access to Zambia's Geological Survey Data
The GSD Digital Store, a pioneering platform providing access to geological publications and datasets, was officially launched at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka. The event marked a significant step forward in Zambia's digital transformation agenda and its commitment to sustainable exploration and growth in the mining sector.
Hon. Paul C. Kabuswe, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, spoke at the event, highlighting the transition to a digital archive as a "major step forward" in managing Zambia's natural resources. Dr. Hapenga Kabeta, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, reiterated this sentiment, stating that the GSD Digital Store will revolutionize Zambia's mining sector by providing efficient, secure, and accessible geological data.
The GSD Digital Store is designed to be user-friendly, integrating modern analytical tools to support advanced exploration and evidence-based decision-making. It is expected to attract investment, foster innovation, and enhance transparency in resource management.
Mr. Tuleyone Mpengula, IT and Digitalisation Lead at Kobold Metals, commended the collaborative effort between government and private partners for the creation of the GSD Digital Store. He emphasized the importance of technology and partnerships in advancing Zambia's national development agenda.
Ms. Kasali Musenge, Acting National Coordinator of the Smart Zambia Institute, spoke at the launch event and reaffirmed the government's commitment to hosting and managing the platform locally. She emphasized that the local hosting ensures Zambia's data and knowledge remain under national stewardship.
The development of the Geological Survey Department Digital Stores in Zambia was realized by Zambia’s Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development under the oversight of Zambia’s Chief Geologist, Desiderius Chapewa, who manages the National Geological Database.
The GSD Digital Store benefits researchers, geologists, investors, and the general public by providing seamless access to decades of geological publications and datasets. It is hoped that this initiative will solidify Zambia's position in the regional digital economy and contribute to sustainable exploration and growth in the mining sector.
