Local Council Allows Sidewalk Parking to Boost Cyclist Safety

In a move to bolster safety for cyclists, the local council has announced plans to permit parking on sidewalks in certain areas. This change aims to prevent 'dooring incidents' where cyclists collide with car doors that are suddenly opened. The first street to see this adjustment is Marburger Straße.

The sidewalk along Marburger Straße, between Sudetenlandstraße and Schwarzlachweg, is wide enough to accommodate parked vehicles. Currently, parking is allowed on a side strip next to a bike lane, but without a prescribed safety separation stripe. By moving parking to the sidewalk, a safety stripe can be marked towards parked vehicles, providing an additional layer of protection for cyclists.

The change will be clearly indicated by updated signage along the street. These signs will adhere to traffic regulations, ensuring drivers and cyclists are aware of the new parking arrangements.

The adjustment on Marburger Straße is part of a wider effort to enhance safety for cyclists. By allowing parking on the sidewalk and marking a safety separation stripe, the council hopes to reduce 'dooring incidents' and create a safer environment for all road users.
