Long-standing alliance between Tallink Silja Line and the John Nurminen Foundation underscores their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the Baltic Sea's ecosystem.

Non-profit organization John Nurminen Foundation from Finland signs collaboration deal with Tallink Grupp for the year 2025, encompassing their shared objectives.

Fresh Take:

Tallink Grupp teams up with John Nurminen Foundation to safeguard the Baltic Sea in 2025. For every Captain's chocolate bar sold onboard their vessels, 20 euro cents will be donated to the foundation, supporting vital projects focused on preserving the Baltic Sea, its environment, and culture.

Tallink Grupp's retail subsidiary, Tallink Duty Free, has been partnering with the foundation for its third year running. In 2024, they donated EUR 20,000 from the sales of their Captain's chocolate bars throughout the year.

Aimar Pärna, Head of Tallink Duty Free, expressed his enthusiasm for the continued collaboration:

  • "The Baltic Sea is central to Tallink Grupp, and we're committed to keeping it clean and preserving its marine environment. We were the first shipping company in the Baltic Sea region to receive the Sustainable Travel Finland label in 2020, and we're dedicated to offering eco-friendly travel options to our customers. This includes reducing our ships' CO2 emissions by 63.5% compared to 2008, operating environmentally friendly hotels, serving locally sourced food, and seeking innovative technological solutions. We're always looking for ways to minimize our environmental impact and collaborate with partners like John Nurminen Foundation to achieve our sustainability goals."
  • "We're thrilled to continue our fruitful partnership with the John Nurminen Foundation, whose efforts focus on protecting our domestic sea and ensuring its sustainability. Our Tallink Silja Line customers are happy to know they can make a difference for the Baltic Sea by choosing to purchase our branded chocolate, as every sale contributes directly to our donations to the foundation. This partnership is supported and approved by our Tallink Silja Line teams, and the foundation presents its initiatives to our ships' sales personnel every spring, enhancing mutual understanding of our environmental efforts."

In the past two years, funds from the sales of goods in onboard shops, such as branded water bottles and chocolate bars, have been donated to the foundation. In 2025, Tallink Silja Line customers can continue supporting the cause by purchasing our branded Captain's chocolate, as Tallink Grupp will donate 20 cents from each bar sold during the year.

Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, CEO of John Nurminen Foundation, commented on the longstanding cooperation:

  • "The support of partners like Tallink Duty Free is crucial to our efforts. With their help, we can implement effective projects across the entire Baltic Sea catchment area. In addition to financial support, the expertise provided by Tallink Grupp helps us plan new projects related to sustainable maritime activities."

The funds donated by Tallink Grupp will be allocated to projects like the Sea Too -project (Meren puolella), which addresses the loss of marine biodiversity in the Baltic Sea by restoring underwater habitats and promoting sustainable use of natural resources[1][2]. Another project, the "Agri and Culture" initiative in Southwest Finland, aims to decrease nutrient runoff in the Archipelago Sea in collaboration with local farmers, while also preserving cultural heritage and engaging the local community[1][2].

Tallink Grupp and John Nurminen Foundation have been working together since 2003, with numerous projects addressing the preservation of the Baltic Sea.
