Man, 71, Falls for Online Job Scam, Police Issue Warning
A 71-year-old man from Siegburg has fallen victim to an online scam, involving a job offer that turned out to be a ruse. The incident, reported on March 25, has prompted police warnings about such tactics.
The victim initially received a call from an unknown person, who offered job mediation after the victim registered on a job search portal. Suspicious, the victim declined and ended the call, later filing a police report. The suspect, however, persisted. They convinced the victim to install an app on his mobile phone, which allowed them to remotely access the device and take photos. The suspect called the victim four times from different foreign numbers, eventually demanding the victim's bank details. The police warn that criminals are using remote desktop software to gain control of victims' devices in this manner.
The Rhein-Sieg district police headquarters advises maintaining a healthy dose of skepticism online and strengthening cyber resilience to protect against such crimes.
