Maruti Suzuki establishes a Vocational Training Institute in Haryana, aiming to bolster the auto industry's skills development.
Maruti Suzuki Bolsters Skill Development in Indian Automotive Manufacturing
Maruti Suzuki, a key player in the Indian automotive industry, has embarked on a comprehensive skill development strategy to prepare the workforce for the future. This strategy encompasses the establishment of Japan-India Institutes for Manufacturing (JIMs), collaboration with government training institutions, and investment in new-age technology education.
- Japan-India Institutes for Manufacturing (JIM)
Maruti Suzuki has invested ₹10 crore in the new JIM campus in Sonipat, Haryana, which includes infrastructure and equipment upgrades. The Haryana government provided the land and building. At JIM Sonipat, students gain hands-on experience through a real-life assembly line, offering practical exposure to automotive manufacturing processes [1][3].
- Collaboration with Government ITIs and Skill Enhancement Centres
Beyond standalone JIMs, Maruti Suzuki supports 23 government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across India by setting up skill labs and providing specialized training for students and trainers. They have established 31 Automobile Skill Enhancement Centres (ASECs) for advanced training in auto servicing, maintenance, and vehicle repair. High-voltage technology training (targeting hybrids and electric vehicles) has been incorporated in 130 ITIs to build future-ready skills [1][3].
- Investment in Skill Development and Apprenticeships
Maruti Suzuki has committed over ₹450 crore under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program for skill development up to FY 2024-25. It also runs apprenticeship programs aimed at ITI graduates to prepare them as skilled shop-floor professionals for the automotive manufacturing industry [1][3].
- Maruti Suzuki Training Academy
The Maruti Suzuki Training Academy in Gurgaon operates as an NSDC training partner, offering vocational education aligned with national skill development goals. It features advanced automotive laboratories and collaborates with corporate partners for industry exposure and placement support. The academy fosters holistic growth with extracurricular activities that aid leadership and teamwork skills development [5].
These initiatives are part of Maruti Suzuki's broader strategy to fill the skills gap in the manufacturing industry and meet national employment objectives. JIMs are part of a collaboration between the governments of India and Japan to educate 30,000 Indian youth with manufacturing capabilities. The new JIM campus in Sonipat is affiliated with the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) and accredited by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Furthermore, these efforts are aligned with the government's 'Skill India Mission' [2].
