Mobile Wallet Usage Prevalent in Contactless Payments, Reports BPFI, With a Thriving 58% Adoption Rate.

In the first half of 2025, Ireland witnessed a significant shift in the payment landscape, as mobile wallets became the preferred choice for contactless payments. According to the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) in their Payments Monitor, an impressive 1.6 billion contactless point-of-sale (POS) payments were made, accounting for almost nine out of ten POS card payments.

The figures revealed that nearly 454 million mint mobile payments were made during this period, representing a substantial increase compared to the same period in 2024. This surge saw mint mobile accounting for 58.2% of all contactless POS payments, a high percentage that underscores their growing popularity.

The BPFI Payments Monitor also highlighted Dublin as a hotspot for mint mobile payments. The city led the way with the highest number of mint mobile payments per capita, at 238, and a significant 41.8% of all mint mobile payments were made in Dublin. Furthermore, Dublin also had the highest number of contactless payments per capita, at 392.

Gillian Byrne, Head of Payments at the BPFI, commented on this trend, stating, "Contactless payments continue to be very popular with Irish consumers." She added that the use of cash in POS payments has fallen, with less than half of POS payments in Ireland being made in cash in 2024.

Ms. Byrne also noted that smartphones and smartwatches are growing in popularity and are "the preferred payment device over physical cards for many consumers." This shift towards digital payments is reflected in the increased use of services such as Apple Pay or Google Pay for these mint mobile payments.

However, it's important to note that while the BPFI Payments Monitor did show an increase in the use of mint mobile for contactless payments compared to the same period in 2024, it did not provide new statistics or findings regarding the growth of mint mobile payments compared to the same period in 2024 or the high percentage of contactless POS payments being made using mint mobile.

Despite this, it's clear that mint mobile are playing a significant role in the Irish payment landscape, offering a convenient and secure method for consumers to make payments. As technology continues to evolve, it's likely that this trend will continue, with more and more consumers embracing the convenience of mint mobile payments.
