Moldova's Pro-European Forces Win Big in Parliamentary Elections
Moldova's parliamentary elections resulted in a decisive victory for pro-European forces, with President Maia Sandu's Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) securing around 50% of the vote. This outcome is a significant boost for Moldova's EU integration efforts, despite facing cyberattacks and allegations of Russian interference.
The elections were marked by multiple cyberattacks on Moldova's electoral infrastructure, with authorities attributing previous disinformation campaigns to Moscow. Despite the Kremlin's accusation of restricted voting rights, Moldovans turned out to support pro-European parties. The pro-Russian Patriotic Electoral Bloc, led by Igor Dodon, received less than 25% of the vote, a notable decrease from the last election.
Fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor, known for his Russian backing and attempts to disrupt Moldova's EU integration, was implicated in paying protesters. However, his influence appeared to wane as voters backed pro-European parties. Dodon rejected the results and called for protests, but the outcome seems to strengthen President Sandu's EU aspirations.
The Moldovan government will now prioritize EU integration, with President Sandu's push reinforced by the election results. Western leaders have congratulated her on the outcome. Despite cyberattacks and hoax bomb threats targeting voters, Moldova's democratic process remained robust, delivering a clear mandate for pro-European policies.
