Munich Airport debuts Bavaria's foremost electric vehicle charging station
Munich Airport, a key player in Germany's climate protection strategy, is making significant strides in its quest for a carbon-neutral future. The airport's operator, Flughafen München GmbH (FMG), has unveiled its ambitious 'Net Zero 2035 Strategy', aiming to eliminate all climate-damaging CO2 emissions from the airport's operations by the year 2035.
One of the key components of this strategy is the airport's extensive charger park. With over 1,140 charging points currently available for electric vehicles and devices used on the aprons, Munich Airport boasts one of the largest charging hubs in Bavaria. This infrastructure not only caters to the growing number of electric vehicles but also links energy generation, mobility, and power grid infrastructure, as explained by Jost Lammers, the airport's CEO.
FMG is not just focusing on reducing emissions it can influence, such as energy generation and vehicle operation. The company is also striving to minimise emissions generated by third parties, including those from arrival and departure at the airport. This proactive approach demonstrates FMG's commitment to creating a sustainable ecosystem around the airport.
In terms of energy generation, Munich Airport is already harnessing solar power effectively. Today, photovoltaic plants on the airport buildings generate around seven megawatts at peak times. By 2030, this capacity is expected to increase significantly, with the installation of additional photovoltaic plants expected to boost the capacity to around 50 megawatts.
This ambitious project is being realised in partnership with BayWa r.e., a regional company that has been instrumental in the development of the largest electric charging hub project in Bavaria at Munich Airport. This collaboration underscores FMG's commitment to working with industry leaders to achieve its Net Zero 2035 goals.
As Munich Airport continues to expand its charger infrastructure and solar power capacity, it serves as a beacon of sustainability in the aviation industry, setting an example for other airports around the world to follow.
