Munich Airport Resumes Operations After Drone Disruptions Affecting Thousands
Munich Airport has resumed operations after drone sightings caused disruptions, affecting thousands of passengers. The incident has reignited calls for better protection of airports and the ability to shoot down drones in certain cases.
The number of drone-related incidents at German airports has surged this year, with 144 cases reported by the end of August. Munich Airport alone faced 6 such incidents by August, while Frankfurt Airport had 35. The latest disruptions occurred on Thursday and Friday evenings, with unknown drones affecting around 9,500 passengers.
Politics is pushing for enhanced airport protection and the power to shoot down drones in urgent situations. Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann wants the state police to have this authority immediately. Ralph Beisel, CEO of the Airport Association ADV, has called for a competence center dedicated to defending against unmanned aerial objects. Organizations like the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Vodafone, Frequentis, and the Rostock Fire Brigade are using drones to improve emergency response through live aerial images. However, the increasing number of unauthorized drone deployments is causing concern.
Munich Airport has resumed operations, but travelers should expect delays due to the drone incident. The rise in drone-related disruptions at airports has prompted calls for better protection and the ability to shoot down drones in acute danger. Politics is pushing for these changes, with Bavaria's Interior Minister wanting immediate action. The Airport Association ADV has also called for a competence center to combat this growing issue.
