2024 YR4 is classified as an Apollo-type asteroid, as it orbits around the sun at a distance similar to Earth's. More than 33,000 near-Earth asteroids have been discovered and tracked since 1990. Despite these efforts, over 20,000 Apollo-type asteroids remain oblivious to humanity, given their significant distance from Earth.

Binzel has developed the Torino Impact Hazard Scale – a tool to assess the threat potential of potential Earth impact events. Even with a lower impact probability, 2024 YR4 is still categorized as a close encounter and merits attention from astronomers.

Probability Fluctuations

Binzel explained that the probability of 2024 YR4 striking Earth would continue to bounce around, possibly increasing before it is eventually ruled out as a threat. As more data accumulates, the uncertainty surrounding the asteroid's trajectory is expected to decrease.

If the possibility of an impact increases, the planetary defense community has a variety of options, including a kinetic impactor mission similar to the NASA's DART mission in 20XX, a gravity tractor spacecraft, or a nuclear deflection (though a nuclear deflection is a risky last resort).

Moon in Danger

Contrary to popular belief, the moon is not completely safe from these celestial threats. Current calculations estimate an 0.8% impact probability (1 in 125 chance) that the asteroid will collide with the moon, instead of Earth, on December 22, 20XX32.
