Nations Race to Build AI Infrastructure for Global Leadership

Nations worldwide are racing to build their own AI infrastructure, recognizing AI as the 'new oil' and a key to resilience in the digital age. The United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Austria are among the countries investing heavily in AI supercomputers and data centers. Meanwhile, China is developing sovereign chips and AI-powered smart cities, aiming for global leadership by 2030.

Relying on hyperscalers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud, while convenient, creates dependence and risks. To mitigate this, countries are building their own AI stacks for control over infrastructure, data, and innovation. The U.S. has advanced with executive orders and AI Action Plans, while India is investing in its AI stack to democratize access. Saudi Arabia is pushing forward with a $40 billion AI megafund, and the EU is anchoring growth on trust and compliance through the AI Act.

PwC projects AI could add $15.7 trillion to the global GDP by 2030, making control over domestic AI ecosystems a determinant of international competitiveness. A sovereign AI stack offers resilience, regulatory alignment, and the ability to innovate on national terms.

As AI becomes increasingly crucial to global competitiveness, nations are prioritizing AI sovereignty. With significant investments and strategic planning, countries are positioning themselves to lead in the AI era, much like they once did in the age of oil.
