NATO Boosts Baltic Defense to Counter Russia's New Generation Warfare
NATO is reviewing its force posture in the Baltics to deter potential Russian aggression. Experts warn that Russia's New Generation Warfare concept, involving advanced technologies and adaptable strategies, demands a robust response. The Baltics, particularly Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, face persistent pressure from Russia, with military exercises and cyber threats posing significant risks.
To counter this, NATO plans to deploy at least seven brigades, including three heavy brigades, along with air support and other enablers. This follows concerns that Russian forces could overrun the Baltic States within 36 to 60 hours, given current NATO force levels. Critics argue that the West, including the US, has not sufficiently focused on these aspects. The 2018 US National Security Strategy and NATO's 2030 strategic concept now acknowledge this long-term competition with near-peer competitors like Russia and China. Since regaining independence in 1990, the Baltic states have faced constant Russian pressure, including airspace violations and large-scale military exercises.
NATO's planned reinforcement in the Baltics aims to deter Russian aggression and reassure allies. The deployment, along with enhanced air support and other capabilities, reflects the evolving threat landscape, where military power is complemented by influence operations and cyber warfare. This move underscores the West's commitment to collective defence and its recognition of the enduring competition with Russia.
