The Sony Reon Pocket Pro is a state-of-the-art portable air conditioner specifically designed to cool the neck area without causing any stiffness or discomfort. During our practical testing, this wearable device unsurprisingly yielded satisfactory results, proving both comfortable and efficient in a modern, compact design.

When the mercury rises above 30°C (86°F)—as it often does during summer—it can put a significant strain on the body. A popular remedy dating back to decades is to cool the neck region, for example, by using wet towels. Sony's Reon Pocket Pro essentially follows the same principle but employs advanced thermo-modules to maintain a cool temperature for hours. Additionally, it comes with smart temperature regulation, making it just as useful during winter.

Suitable for All Clothes

Resembling a small, splash-proof drone without propellers, the Reon Pocket Pro weighs about 250g (8.8oz) and is attached to the neck using a flexible bracket. Close to the skin, there is a curved metal plate, behind which two thermo-modules are concealed.

Heat is dissipated through a fan on the top, while nozzles in two different lengths (for T-shirt or shirt usage) permit air intake at the bottom, adding to the cooling effect. Intuitive switches are included on the sides, although it's much more convenient to utilize the accompanying mobile app, especially when wearing the device.

Manual or Smart Cooling

Providing users with two options, the Reon Pocket Pro allows manual temperature adjustment in several increments or automatic temperature regulation via sensors that measure body and air temperature, as well as humidity levels. A wear detection feature automatically activates and pauses the device depending on whether it is being worn.

Included with the device, priced at around 230€ ($250), is a small tag that can be attached to clothing or a handbag. This tag measures air temperature, humidity, and motion, guaranteeing precise temperature adjustments under various conditions.

Comfortable Fit

Achieving the best possible fit for the neck air conditioner to function optimally is crucial. The holding bracket can be removed or shortened according to preference, making it adjustable to fit most users comfortably. During our testing, it took a few attempts to achieve the perfect settings; however, once positioned correctly, the curved metal plate lay almost perfectly on the skin without any discomfort.

The neck brace may present more challenges for people with prominent spinal processes, who can find it helpful to wear the device slightly off-center.

Efficient and Comfortable

The automatic temperature regulation system proved highly efficient during our testing. Capable of both cooling and heating, or a combination of both, it prevents overcooling and stiff necks by reacting rapidly to nearby temperature fluctuations.

In terms of volume, the ventilation is office-friendly and suitable for a power nap, producing only a soft rustling sound near the ears—even at maximum power. A light sensing and motion detection feature allows users to set five different target temperature levels, varying from weak to strong, providing extended battery life.

Long Battery Life

During our testing, the battery life proved remarkably good, with the device lasting more than eight hours in automatic mode on a day with outdoor temperatures over 30°C (86°F). Under continuous use at maximum cooling power, Sony estimates about 5.5 hours of battery life would be achievable.

On the lowest setting, the battery lasts about 34 hours, with 18 hours available on medium cooling. For heating, the battery lasts between 5.5 and 10 hours, according to Sony. A fully discharged battery takes 200 minutes to recharge, although this lengthy process can be extended by connecting an external power bank to the Reon Pocket Pro.

Conclusion

It's evident that Sony's Reon Pocket Pro is a well-thought-out, efficient, and practical device for everyday use, especially among individuals who spend a significant amount of time outdoors or in non-air-conditioned spaces during the warmer months. Despite its premium pricing of around 230€ ($250), it can be a worthy investment for those who value the benefits of personal cooling in hot weather. Notably, the Reon Pocket Pro also provides useful functionality in cooler temperatures.

The Commission, in the midst of technological advancements, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, considering the increasing use of gadgets like smartphones and other technology equipment that emit such radiation. As the Sony Reon Pocket Pro offers advanced cooling technology to combat the physical strain caused by high temperatures, its compact design and efficient operation also make it an essential gadget for workers who are exposed to uncomfortable office temperatures.
