Nerd Transforms Lego Game Boy into Functional Device in Hours
Natalie the Nerd, a skilled PCB designer and modder, has transformed her Lego Game Boy into a functional device that plays real Nintendo cartridges. She achieved this feat in less than a day after the Lego set's launch.
Natalie's mod uses an authentic MGB (pocket) CPU with on-package RAM, ensuring a genuine gaming experience without emulation. She replaced the faux cards with the smallest screen kit available, fitting perfectly into the Lego set.
The custom PCB, designed and soldered by Natalie, is smaller than a real DMG cartridge. It connects to the Lego set, enabling it to accept and play real Nintendo Game Boy cartridges. Tetris has been successfully demonstrated as a playable game. Natalie plans to integrate working buttons using a 3D-printed Lego piece for enhanced functionality.
Natalie, who previously built the first fully-transparent Game Boy motherboard, aims to release her design files publicly. This will allow others to convert their own Lego Game Boy sets into playable devices.
Natalie the Nerd's Lego Game Boy mod is a remarkable achievement in gaming and modding communities. Her work showcases her expertise in PCB design and her passion for gaming. With her plans to release the design files, she enables others to create their own functional Lego Game Boys, further enriching the gaming experience.
