Netflix shaking up its TV and mobile apps with a fresh redesign

Netflix is bringing a breath of fresh air to its TV app, with a revamp rolling out on May 19. The goal? To make content discovery less of a headache and more of a joy.

A whole new Netflix TV app experience

Get ready to bid adieu to endless scrolling through Netflix's extensive library. The updated app will sport a navigation bar that'll always be visible at the top of your screen. You'll find the usual suspects -Search, Shows, Movies, Games, and My Netflix, plus a central hub for Continue Watching, My List, and Remind Me. Oh, and your remote's back button now takes you directly to the navigation bar. Easy as pie!

Content tiles will be larger and bursting with essential details. Titles may have recently added or leaving soon alerts, awards they've won, synopses, runtimes, and key cast members front and center. But that’s not all – the app will now offer more responsive recommendations based on your trailers you watch, thumbs up or down, and searches.

Live events will get star treatment at the top of the home screen, and the new design is sleeker and more intuitive to reflect Netflix’s growing entertainment offerings. The redesign will gradually roll out to TVs and streaming devices worldwide over a few weeks. So don't fret if you don't see it on May 19 - it's probably on its way!

Netflix mobile app refresh and OpenAI-powered feature test

Netflix isn't stopping at the TV app. They're also refreshing the mobile app experience with a vertical video feed of clips and trailers. Tap to watch the full version, add it to My List, or share it.

Innovation alert! Netflix has been testing an OpenAI-powered feature on iOS that offers recommendations based on conversational phrases describing your mood. This means you can search for content using terms other than specific titles, actors, and genres. Currently available only to select users in Australia and New Zealand, this open-ended recommendation feature will soon be available as an opt-in beta more widely on iOS devices this week.

To sum it up, Netflix's latest redesigns for TV and mobile aim to simplify content discovery and provide a more adaptive and intuitive user experience, matching Netflix's constant evolution toe-to-toe with emerging entertainment trends and viewer preferences.
