Netherlands Boosts Ukraine's Defense with $59M UGV Donation

The Netherlands has stepped up to support Ukraine's defense efforts, with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof announcing a $59 million contribution to the World Bank's trust fund for Ukraine's recovery. This significant donation will facilitate the delivery of over 150 unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to Ukraine, bolstering its military capabilities.

The project, led by Milrem Robotics Netherlands in collaboration with VDL Defentec, involves the setup of a dedicated final assembly line in Born by VDL Groep CEO Willem van der Leegte. A substantial portion of the vehicles will be assembled in cooperation with the Dutch company VDL Defentec. Milrem Robotics CEO Kuldar Värsi expressed his honor in leading the project and believes the THeMIS platform will significantly strengthen Ukraine's defense capability.

The donation was formally announced and signed off by Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans on October 6 at VDL's facility in Born. The financial support for this large-scale delivery mainly comes from European countries, coordinated within NATO and the European Union frameworks. The new vehicles will join the existing 15 THeMIS units already deployed in Ukraine, supporting Ukrainian forces since 2022. Milrem Robotics will also provide comprehensive training for Ukrainian operators and technical personnel.

The Netherlands' $59 million contribution has enabled the delivery of over 150 THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles to Ukraine, demonstrating European defense industry cooperation and capacity for future production and innovation. This significant military support is expected to further enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities in its ongoing conflict.
