New MG4 Electric: Revolutionary Semi-Solid-State LFP Battery Unveiled

The British automotive brand MG has unveiled the second generation of its compact electric car, the MG4 Electric. This new model, launched in China in March 2022, showcases a significant leap forward in battery technology and overall design.

Weighing just 1,485 kilograms, the new MG4 Electric is 45 millimeters longer and 44 millimeters wider than its predecessor, measuring approximately 4,395 mm in length and 1,842 mm in width. The wheelbase has also grown to 2.75 meters, providing more interior space.

The star of the show is the MG4's innovative semi-solid-state Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery. This cutting-edge technology, a first for mass-produced electric cars, combines the benefits of solid-state batteries (such as improved safety and stability) with sufficient ion conductivity for performance. The battery chemistry maintains about 13.8% more capacity at low temperatures (-7°C) than traditional LFP batteries and offers an energy density of approximately 180 Wh/kg.

The pack size is a substantial 70 kWh, powering the vehicle to deliver an estimated range of up to 537 km under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). Although European ranges are generally a bit lower due to differing test protocols, the MG4 still offers competitive real-world ranges, with other variants offering a range of around 450 km.

Powering the rear wheels is a 120 kW (around 163 horsepower) electric motor, providing a dynamic driving experience and efficiency benefits. The MG4 Electric sits on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) with a cell-to-body (CTB) structural battery system, where the battery pack is structurally integrated as part of the car chassis, improving rigidity and saving weight.

The MG4's interior boasts the MG×Oppo smart cockpit system, integrating smartphone functions, voice control, gesture navigation, and app synchronization. Comfort and practicality are enhanced by features like power-adjustable, heated and ventilated front sport seats, a flat rear floor for spaciousness, rear air vents, wireless phone charging, and a panoramic roof.

Advanced driver assistance features are included, such as active emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keep assist, traffic jam assist, blind spot detection, and more, depending on the trim level.

Pricing for the new MG4 Electric is competitive. In China, it ranges from approximately €9,600 to €14,400 due to local subsidies and lower production costs. European prices start higher (e.g., from around €27,845) but still remain affordable in the EV segment. The European launch is anticipated by late 2025.

With its breakthrough battery technology, advanced electronics, and driver assistance tech, the MG4 Electric stands out as a significant EV contender for both China and Europe.
