Nintendo, time to reconsider the high costs of those vintage game releases
In the recent September Nintendo Direct, the gaming giant announced the return of two beloved classics: Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. These games will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2, but at a price that has sparked debate among fans.
Nintendo, known for its unique approach to the gaming industry, prices its games to reflect the work put into ports. This philosophy is evident in the pricing of the Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 bundle, which will retail at approximately €49.99 to €69.99 for the physical or digital edition.
The question on many fans' minds is whether these games are worth the price tag. While some argue that the quality of Nintendo's games doesn't degrade over time, others believe that the prices could be more modest, especially considering that Super Mario Galaxy is only available on Wii or through the 3D All-Stars bundle, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 has never been available on modern consoles until now.
Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's legendary game designer, detailed plans for celebrating Mario's 450th birthday in the same Direct. The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie was also mentioned.
Nintendo fans, trained not to expect sales or discounts compared to other publishers, are left to decide whether to invest in the bundle or purchase the individual titles, each priced at €40.
The writer of this article, however, expresses reservations about the price, suggesting that if Nintendo were to cool it with how it prices its classic and older games, it would be beneficial from a consumer standpoint. The writer also questions the decision to make the 3D All-Stars bundle artificially scarce.
Despite these concerns, the September Nintendo Direct was considered one of the best presentations in years, with the return of these beloved games being a highlight. The writer emphasises that consumers should always push for the best deal possible, but Nintendo only listens to the market and how we vote with our wallets.
If people aren't buying Nintendo's ports, Switch 2 Enhanced games, and peripherals at the prices they set, we would see them fall. The ball is in the consumers' court. The Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 bundle releases on October 2, 2025.
