Ocean Decade: Corporate Data Group Launched to Share Private Sector Ocean Science Data
A groundbreaking initiative, the Ocean Decade Corporate Data Group, has been launched. This group aims to make privately owned ocean science data publicly accessible, fostering international cooperation and improving ocean management.
Co-chaired by Fugro and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC/UNESCO), the group seeks to explore data sharing challenges and opportunities. It will develop solutions and best practices to make private-sector ocean data available for the benefit of all.
Five leading companies have joined as founding members: Alcatel Submarine Networks, Ava Ocean, CGG, Equinor, and Ørsted. Alcatel Submarine Networks, a part of Nokia, is a pioneer in optical submarine systems with over 750,000 km installed worldwide. Fugro, the world's leading Geo-data specialist, employs approximately 9000 people across 59 countries.
Dr. Vladimir Ryabinin, IOC/UNESCO Executive Secretary, expressed gratitude to the founding members for their proactive engagement. Fugro CEO Mark Heine welcomed the high-calibre businesses joining the working group, seeing it as an opportunity to contribute to the Ocean Decade movement through data sharing and technology innovations.
The Ocean Decade Corporate Data Group, launched under the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), marks a significant step towards improving ocean management. With prominent companies on board, the group is well-positioned to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation for sustainable development of the ocean ecosystem.
