OpenAI & Jony Ive's AI Companion Device: A Screen-Free Future by Late 2026
OpenAI, in collaboration with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, is developing a new AI companion device. Set for release by late 2026, this palm-sized gadget aims to coexist with smartphones, offering an alternative to screen-based interactions.
The device, not a phone or glasses, is designed to rest in pockets or on desks, becoming a part of everyday life. It will be always-on, responding to users without a wake word like Amazon's Alexa. Communication will happen through a camera, microphone, and speaker, with multiple cameras being a possibility.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman envisions a rapid rollout, planning to ship 100 million units faster than any company has ever done with a new product. The device's design, however, is not expected to resemble Ive's recent $4,800 sailing lantern.
