Optus Data Breach Affects 7.7 Million: IDs Exposed for 1.2M
Optus has informed customers of a data breach, affecting around 7.7 million individuals. The cyberattack exposed personal information such as email addresses, dates of birth, and phone numbers. The Australian Cyber Security Centre and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner are engaged in addressing the issue.
Optus has assured customers that valid or current document ID numbers were not compromised. However, approximately 1.2 million customers have had at least one number from a current and valid form of identification, along with personal information, exposed. These customers have been notified via email or SMS.
In addition, about 900,000 customers have had numbers relating to expired IDs compromised, alongside personal information. Optus has contacted these individuals and advised them to monitor their accounts and consider credit monitoring services. The company is working with governments and agencies to determine further steps for these customers.
