Partnership forms for a 80 MW wind power project between AWS and Gentari in India, aimed at bolstering the country's carbon neutrality objectives

In a significant move towards a low-carbon future, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Gentari, a Petronas company, have recently signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for an 80MW wind energy project in Tamil Nadu, India. The project, set to begin operations in mid-2027, is expected to generate approximately 300,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable energy annually.

This partnership underscores the growing role of corporate partnerships in driving renewable energy deployment in Asia. For Gentari, the focus is on building partnerships that deliver tangible decarbonization outcomes. The Tamil Nadu wind farm is part of the larger Karur Wind Development region, which also hosts wind projects by Everrenew Energy and Tata Power.

The agreement follows a collaboration deal signed in 2023 between Gentari and AWS, focused on cost-effective, utility-scale renewable energy projects. The partnership represents a significant step in Amazon’s expanding renewable energy footprint in India, complementing its portfolio of solar and wind projects totaling over 1.1 gigawatts of renewable capacity nationally.

Key figures involved in the PPA ceremony included Gentari's CEO Sushil Purohit and AWS ASEAN Managing Director Jeff Johnson, with oversight from Petronas executives. The collaboration embodies a shared commitment to a low-carbon future and practical clean energy deployment critical for Asia’s and the world’s sustainability transitions.

AWS, the world's largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally, aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This partnership with Gentari brings AWS a step closer to its net-zero goal. In addition, AWS is actively exploring partnerships to advance data center decarbonization technology, such as the recent collaboration with Orbital Materials.

Gentari, on the other hand, is expanding its portfolio across renewables, hydrogen, and green mobility. This partnership underscores the accelerating corporate investments in India’s renewables sector, driven by sustainability commitments and India’s strong wind manufacturing and operational ecosystem.
