PC Enthusiast Boosts RTX 2070 Mobile GPU Performance by 15% with Shunt Mod
A PC enthusiast, HerrBolsch, has successfully performed a shunt mod on an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile GPU, boosting its performance by around 15%. The modified GPU kept pace with its desktop counterpart, maintaining top component temperatures around 80°C under load.
The mod involved changing five resistors on the GPU's PCB, increasing the power limit from 115W to 175W. This allowed more current to flow to the GPU, enhancing its performance. HerrBolsch verified the mod's success using a physical Watt meter and thermal camera images.
The RTX 2070 Mobile, after the mod, performed roughly on par with its desktop counterpart. This modification was part of a larger project to re-house and water-cool a Zotac Mini PC. The first public demonstration of this shunt mod on an RTX 2070 Mobile was shared by 'IcChy' on the NotebookReview forum in 2019.
HerrBolsch's shunt mod significantly improved the performance of the RTX 2070 Mobile GPU, bringing it closer to the level of its desktop counterpart. The modded GPU maintained reasonable temperatures under load, demonstrating the potential of such modifications for enhancing laptop graphics performance.
