Potential Squid Game Season 3 Release Date Might Have Been Revealed by Netflix Insider Sources
While Netflix has announced that the third season of Squid Game will debut in 2025 in numerous promotional materials for its upcoming content, there's a possibility they might have accidentally revealed the precise date.
A video briefly aired on Netflix Korea's platform not only revealing the 2025 release date but also specifying June 27, 2025. This would mean a remarkably short turnaround time of only six months for a new season, especially considering it took three years to move from season 1 to season 2.
However, if you've watched season 2 and listened to creator Hwang Dong-hyuk's remarks about this, you'll know that this isn't really a traditional third season but rather an extension of season 2. Here's what transpired:
"I initially planned the series to be a single entity, with seasons 2 and 3 serving as a unified whole when I was writing it. However, as the story progressed, it developed into having too many episodes and an overly lengthy narrative. You see, Gi-hun's journey back into the game, the uprising, and its failure form the climax of this storyline."
"I also viewed this uprising failure as another game, so I decided to split it into two seasons to include Gi-hun's failed rebellion and the loss of his best friend, another significant climactic event in the first half of the season."
Production for both seasons happened simultaneously, so part of the three-year gap involved the creation of a 14-episode arc split into two seasons. While Netflix has been dividing new seasons of popular series occasionally in recent times with 4 and 4 or 5 and 5 episodes, spanning a month or so apart, here we have a six-month gap, with each episode lasting for seven hours. In this scenario, I suppose we can grant them the "season 3" tag.
The reason for such a quick release presumably stems from the audience's eagerness to address the season 2 cliffhangers as soon as possible while also ensuring that the second half of 2025 is reserved for their other two highly-anticipated shows: the finale of Stranger Things season 5 and season 2 of Wednesday, their two most-watched English series, with Squid Game holding the overall record. This year is expected to be monumental for Netflix due to how everything is lined up.
