Prices of transit tickets in Berlin and Brandenburg are on the rise
In the Federal Republic, residents can expect to pay more for local transport tickets, including the Germany ticket and the Berlin Social ticket, as announced by the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB).
The average price increase for various VBB tickets in Berlin and Brandenburg will be approximately 6% from January 1st. In Berlin's city area, a single ticket for bus and train will rise to €4, while in Potsdam, the price will increase by 20 cents to €3. In Cottbus, Frankfurt (Oder), and Cottbus, the prices for single tickets will increase by 20 cents to €2.70.
Opposition politician Kristian Ronneburg (Left) has criticised these price increases, labelling them as unfair and detrimental to the goal of encouraging more people to switch to bus and train. He argues that the current rising rents, high inflation, and an uncertain job market make it best for ticket prices to remain stable.
The VBB has cited increased costs for fuels, personnel, and investments as the reason for the price hike. However, Ronneburg states that these increased costs cannot be fully compensated by federal and state subsidies.
Greenpeace and Environmental Action Germany are taking legal action against the restructuring of Lausitzer Energie AG, adding to the ongoing debate about the affordability and sustainability of transportation in the region.
Meanwhile, there is some positive news on the horizon. From mid-December, the Airport Express will be faster to BER with five trains per hour and direction connecting Berlin Hauptbahnhof with the main airport.
In a bid to combat climate change, the Heidekrautbahn will become climate-neutral to Basdorf by 2026 with hydrogen. However, it is not yet climate-neutral.
Oda Hassepaß, an opposition politician, has also voiced her concern over the price increases, stating that they undermine the goal of switching to bus and train. She has called on the parties responsible in Berlin and Brandenburg to reverse the price increases for tickets in the VBB and the Germany ticket.
These developments highlight the ongoing challenge of balancing the need for affordable and sustainable transportation in the region.
