Proposal sought for a directive on commission's initiative
In the picturesque town of Gitzensteig, Tettnang, Germany, the search for a permanent location for a radio mast has become a topic of discussion. The mobile mast, erected by Vodafone in October 2024, was installed to close a radio gap between Laimnau and Apflau.
However, the temporary structure's future location remains undecided, with several alternatives being meticulously evaluated to minimise environmental impact and avoid threats to nature conservation and local livelihoods.
The city of Tettnang and the Tettnang administration, in collaboration with the residents of Gitzensteig, are actively involved in the search process. This includes assessing potential sites that do not interfere with protected natural areas, disrupt agricultural activities, or residential zones.
Local authorities and stakeholders, including environmental agencies and community representatives, are participating in this process. The evaluation includes environmental impact assessments (EIA), public consultations, and regulatory approvals to ensure compliance with Germany’s stringent nature conservation laws.
Notably, the municipal property in the Langnau district has been assessed as unsuitable for the radio mast from a radio technology standpoint, a conclusion confirmed by an independent expert. The sewage treatment plant Apflau and the area north of Apflau in the state forest have also been checked but deemed unsuitable.
The administration is considering the possibility of installing the planned transmission facility on the existing transmission mast in the "Rattenweiler Wald". Other options within the search area are also being checked by the city administration.
Meanwhile, the mobile mast, initially fulfilling the supply requirement in the area, will remain in place until the final new construction is in operation. Vodafone has commissioned a service provider to erect a permanent new mast, and the building permit for the permanent new mast is with the city of Tettnang.
As of now, no final decision has been publicly announced. The process is progressing with thorough site evaluations and public engagement to balance technical requirements with ecological and social concerns.
