Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken the German landscape by storm, according to Bitkom President Ralf Wintergerst. As a result, it's imperative for Germany to preempt becoming excessively reliant on other nations, particularly China and the USA, in the AI domain. Wintergerst stresses the urgency to establish a self-sufficient German and European AI sector.
Recent findings from a Bitkom study show that an overwhelming majority (68%) believe Germany is currently too dependent on foreign AI powerhouses. In addition, 53% urge the new government to prioritize AI in their economic policies.
Conversely, 28% view AI as heavily overhyped, a decrease of four percentage points since 2024. Simultaneously, an impressive 67% acknowledge AI as the most important emerging technology (2024: 63%).
A breakdown of these figures reveals that German citizens desire AI primarily for use cases in administration, cybersecurity, and healthcare. Nevertheless, it's the US market giants, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google's Gemini, that dominate the landscape, with respectively 43%, 39%, and 28% of the German population presently employing these applications.
The research was conducted between March and April this year, surveying 1005 respondents aged 16 and over in Germany. The sample is representative of the population.
Germany's intent to establish a thriving AI industry is linked to several promising strategies and initiatives, including:
